Chapter Thirty-two

ach vehicle had a slightly different sound, and I was learning to differentiate between them. The little Mercedes that Eduard parked at the kerb almost purred.

‘Someone’s keen,’ Dom murmured, moving to the window. ‘Are you going to tell him?’

‘That someone was watching me transmit this morning? No. I’d rather he not find out what I’m doing.’

Not because I didn’t trust him. He knew I was part of Special Operations; he just didn’t know exactly what I did for them.

She drew the curtains. ‘I don’t know if that makes me feel better or not.’

Neither did I. If he knew that I was in danger from the Resistance as well as the Boche, he’d try to get me out of Normandy, whether I agreed to leave or not.

‘He has a dog with him,’ Dom said.

‘Knut?’

I joined her at the window, watching the Alsatian shepherd bound down the walkway ahead of Eduard. I tried not to laugh when Dom cringed at the dog’s claws on the front door.

‘What that door has gone through,’ she said, shaking her head.

Smothering a grin, I let him in, stepping back as the dog danced around my legs, and when that wasn’t sufficient, he jumped. His paws hit my shoulders; the force of his leap sent me crashing to the floor.

With one last lick across my face, Knut returned to Eduard’s side. My husband helped me to my feet, looking chagrined when I ruffled the fur on the dog’s head before greeting him.

Dom held out her hand in a loose fist for the dog to sniff. He obliged, tail wagging, and thrust his snout into her crotch.

‘Quite enough of that,’ she scolded, red-faced. ‘How are you going to fit both Katrin and your dog in that little car, Colonel?’

Eduard appeared to consider that for a moment.

‘I suppose Knut could stay with you, Frau Severin?’

Dom cleared her throat. ‘I’m sure you’ll make it work.’

With her back straight, she returned to the parlour, closing the door firmly behind her.

Eduard managed to wait until we were halfway down the path to his Mercedes before commenting, ‘Your friend doesn’t like dogs, does she?’

‘She likes them fine. Just prefers cats, I think.’

‘Then it must be me.’

He allowed the ghost of a smile to emerge, and half-surprised, I asked: ‘You like her, don’t you?’

‘She cares for you, Angel. And she will watch your back. For that alone, I am grateful to her.’

He opened the door, allowing Knut in first. The dog posed in the passenger seat, tongue lolling in a canine smile, moving to the almost non-existent back seat only at Eduard’s command. It was the same
